I%26#39;m off to Katmandu pretty soon, can anybody suggest a cheap hotel - (double room)under $40 per night. Also, do they do balloon rides over the mountains - I know they do short plane rides.

I think three or four days would be sufficient for the Kathmandu area. That worked for us during our 2004 visit. You would want to go outside the city for part of a day to get the views of the high peaks from either Narghot or Dhukliel. There are several tour companies that can arrange all or part of your tour.
Regarding the altitude - Kathmandu is only at 4,500 ft. so you should have little or no problems. Even where you would view the high peaks is only 6,500 ft. Be advised that Kathmandu is in a basin and under the right condidtions, the air can be quite polluted. It%26#39;s a fascinating place , and we used it as a base of operation for the start and finish of our Tibet trip in October of 2006.
If u plan just fir city, 2 - 3 days will work. Kathmandu / Patan / Bhaktapur. If u like mini treks, Banepa / Nagarkot will cheer u up.
Kathmandu valley is not just for short visit. It has great enjoyable natural surrounding to be with for long.
3 or 4 days is the minimum time you need including some places in the kathmandu valley like Patan, Bhaktapur, Dulikhel, but you might want to stay longer because it´s a wonderful place.
And maybe because I live in Delhi now I find Kathmandu very relaxing. I just love it there!
We found no problems with altitude at all. However, air pollution due to the traffic was a bit uncomfortable in the middle of the city. It%26#39;s a great city, but it is noisy, crowded , sometimer rather dirty, and perhaps a little polluted - but go there, you will enjoy it for a few day( maybe 3-4) ! The people are great, and there is much to enjoy.
