katmandu advise for tours or driver
Hi Alicia,
First buy the Lonely Planet guide, which gives you all the background you need, and descriptions. If you stay in a hotel in Thamel, you can reach Durbar Square by foot or rickshaw. You can ask your hotel to organise a driver to take you to the different places you%26#39;d like to visit. Actually, we also walked to Swayambhunath, from Thamel, not too far, just unpleasant because of the cars driving on the road. For Bhaktapur I advise to take most of the day, and see Bodhanath and Pashupatinath on the way.
Have a good time!
Hi Alicia:
I think you should be able to see all of these sights in three days. I would also second ';Explore%26#39;s'; suggestion about visiting Nagarkot, which can be combined with the Bhaktapur visit. If the weather is right you might also want to try an early morning Everest flight. I think, given your limited time, that your time would be more efficiently spent if you had a guide and driver. My wife and I spent three days in the Kathmandu area in 2004 and again for parts of three days in 2006. In both instances, we had a guide and driver who proved to invaluable to our Nepal experience. I%26#39;m sure you can get by with the Lonely Planet and a car/driver, but a guide, knowing your time constraints can probably maximize your visit. I guess my attitude is that if you%26#39;re spending the time and money to travel to Kathmandu from the UK, that the relatively small additionmal amount for a guide would be money well spent. It worked well in our case, and gave us memories that will last a lifetime. Feel free to contact me if you need further details on who we worked with. Have a great trip!
Two things from me Alicia:
1. I would try to visit Bodanath late afternonn, early evening as it is much more atmospheric then.
2. Glad to see you have the Garden of Dreams on your list. This is a wonderful haven from the chaos of Thamel.
Have a great time.
Thanks so much for the advice.
