Hey folks crunch time. I will need two rooms for Oct 18-22 and want to stay close by the Shangri La Hotel area but do not want to pay the amount of Shangri La.
I want quality but cost between 50-70 a night would be preferable. Also close in the vicinity of this hotel if possible.
Please help quickly.
Also anyone know how long it takes to get from Kathmandu to Butwal via bus, car, or whatever?
Many thanks from the Yankee

Hi
You could try Hotel Ambassador which is also in Lazimpat. Not stayed there but it looks nice and gets decent reviews:

It is on the same road as Shangri La but nearer to the Thamel end and the Royal Palace.
There is also the Gangjong which is nearer to Shangri La on Lazimpat. Only been in the lobby but appeared OK to me.
Is the Shanker out of price range, as it is worth looking at?

Any thoughts on the nearby Astoria Hotel?
Now that I%26#39;ve returned, I can definitely recommend the Astoria Hotel if you desire to avoid the Thamel area, and get value for your money.
Astoria is located in the Lazimpat (Embassy) area, a several-minute hike, or short taxi ride from Thamel.
It is quite near the Shangri-La and Radisson.
Here%26#39;s a 52-second video I put together:

Astoria is about a 2 minute walk down an alleyway, off the noisey road. Rooms are spacious, although not fancy. The spartan decor has a local flair. Hot water is plentiful, aside from city-wide, scheduled power outages.
If you are looking for an excellent price, friendly staff and appealing grounds, Astoria is worth considering.
By the way...be sure to have your audio on as you view that video in the link above.
