Which way to go?

Hello travelers,

I am a budget backpacker. I will be traveling to Nepal via India, then onwards to Tibet via Nepal. I am thinking a total of 6-7 months trip from July to Dec./Jan 09.

Here are some questions and any advice would be appreciated!

1- Where is the hassle free /nearest city to cross the border to Kathmandu?

2-What is the general cost for Everest base camp trekking?

3-Crossing to Tibet:

Can i do overland to Tibet from Nepal on a budget bus trip? Or I need to join a local tour?

4-Do I need a Visa or special permit to Tibet? Can I apply in Nepal and how much?

Many thanks in advance

K

You can cross to India to Nepal through Sanauli Border, it is 100km from Gorakhpur. From here you can go to Pokhara is 15km, Katmandu is 300km.

Thanks.

The average cost of Everest Base camp is around US$ 25 per person per day.

The bus trip to Tibet is not functional at the moment. So, you need to do organized trip.

You need a group visa to travel to tibet. The cost of a group visa is US$ 110 for US citizens and US$ 26 for citizens from other countries.
