Fantastic organisation called Volunteer Service of Nepal (VSN). Go to www.volunteer.org.nz Are you a medical student/ trained person? I volunteered with VSN last year in children%26#39;s orphanages. They run health clinics throughout orphanages and would be your best option I believe. There is a similiar organisation called volunteer society nepal. This is not VSN and I don%26#39;t know anything about them but keep in mind there are lots of dodgy places out there. I don%26#39;t know that you would be welcome/ able to handle working in a hospital itself. Two children had severe ear infections while I was there and were taken to hospital. The doctors solution was to cut behind their ear with no anesthetic or sterile equipment and suck out the infection. This is completely normal practice.
volunteering in Nepal
Hi,
We trekked Annapurna Base Camp last Oct, known as the most beautiful of all the areas to trek. About 11 days.
This Oct we return to do Everest Base camp, which is a much more desolate landscape, not as beautiful so we have extended it to include Cho La Pass and Goyko Lakes which is higher into the snowline and should be beautiful. It is a hard trek though and you must be very fit to enjoy it.
We book direct with a Nepalese company which is half the price of booking in Australia, however if youre volunteering in KTM you can organise a trek at a few days notice. We did a private trek which was wonderful as we could move at our own pace. Just me, my husband, porter and sherpa. We made plenty of friends along the way. We had a lovely female sherpa which Id recommend as they get far less work than the men but they are just as strong with the added benefit of being very caring to your needs.
If youre not fussed about the stigma of going to Everest Id say do Annapurna. Ive never seen anything more stunning.
Get on the net to read some blogs on trekking or to look up KTM companies. Cheers, Donna
