Water - chemical treatment - what's least harmful to the bod

For our trek we will need to not only to filter the water but also use a supplemental chemical treatment to remove possible viruses that the filter will not.

I am aware of the iodine and chlorine chemical treatments - with iodine leaving unpleasant taste. Which of those two would you use?

Are there any other effective options?

We used chlorine drops without any health problems. The only issue we had is that one of the bottles of solution developed a small leak (possibly because people were sitting on the luggage on top of the bus) and made a bit of a mess. (Fortunately there was enough solution left for the rest of our trip.)

You could also look at something like the MSR MIOX Purifier.

If you use chemical treatments, I%26#39;m not sure a filter is absolutely necessary, as every town seemed to have a tap supplying clear water.

thanks for the reply- I lean toward the filter and chemical- better safe than sorry :)

This was my setup, which I recommend to anyone:

2 nalgene bottles, 1 marked clean, 1 marked dirty. I%26#39;d fill the dirty one, use the chemical (I used iodine, which you can find in many places in Nepal). Then filter that into the clean bottle. The filter not only finished the job, but also pretty much removed the iodine taste. 2 months without ever getting ill.

I carried a two liter plastic bottle, a jar of iodine pills, and many many individual packs of Tang.

Worked out quite well. Get as clean a water as you can, then put in a couple iodine pills, and then pour in a pack of tang. I was the envy of the group. Tang tasted great and hid the taste of the iodine. Got a shitload of vitamin C as well!

The Tang you can buy at any store on the Trek.

Also a tip- buy a plastic cannister of handi-wipes. Takes the place of a shower- if you know what I mean!
