Dashain 2065 (October 2008)

Hi,

We are planning a trekking holiday for the coming October. I understand that during Dashain holiday (10 days), it is very hard to travel and very hard to trek since everything is closed and porters/guides go home and do not work (and thus it is hard to hire them during this holiday period).

I would like to know when this holiday is celebrated this year . Also am I correct that I should avoid visiting/trekking Nepal then.

We visited Nepal during Dashain a couple of years ago. We found that many places in Kathmandu shut down for certain days of the festival, but we had no trouble trekking independently, once we got to the trailhead. Transportation was very crowded, as everyone goes to visit relatives at this time--sometimes bringing goats and chickens!

As far as hiring a guide at that time goes, we were offered guiding services a few times near the beginning of the trek, and there was no shortage of trekking touts in Kathmandu (although we didn%26#39;t actually inquire with them about the possibility of starting during the festival).

It,s great you are planning a trekking holiday for this coming October in Nepal.According to your question in this festival time normaly all people are busy but it is not difficult for trekking .If you want hire porters/guides you should contact before this festival time.But that is not necessary to visiting/trekking in nepal.

hello, just saw on this website www.everestguides.com/festivals-of-nepal/ that the festival is from 12 to 21 oct. Hope it helps

As far as I know, the trekking area of Nepal are not affected by any riots. Main problem is in the south (terai part of nepal). I don%26#39;t think you should avoid visiting Nepal, you will be fine. As said before main day of Dashera is on 21st October, you will have to arrange everything well beofre that to avoid any dissapointment last minute.

Dashera falls on 9th October this year. 21st October is infact for the last year (2007). Hope you haven%26#39;t made plans on the basis of 21st October.
